Volunteer @ Anjali-House!
Volunteering is a great way to be a part of Anjali’s work, and the valuable support that you help to provide for the children will be a memorable experience.
Anjali House is a Cambodian NGO, and all but one of our employees are Khmer. It is our goal to make our project sustainable by empowering our Khmer staff. The volunteers that are of greatest value to the project are people who have skills, ideas or experiences that they are willing to impart to the Khmer staff so the ball keeps rolling long after they depart.
While the time a volunteer stays varies greatly, we have a 1-month minimum required volunteering period for classroom volunteers. This is in order to maximize the benefits for the children and your own experience. For stays between 2 weeks and 1 month, consider volunteering in our office or on a project.
Additionally, we ask each volunteer to make a USD $250 contribution to support the running costs of the volunteer program.
We are looking for 3 types of volunteers to support our organization:
Project based volunteers and groups
One of the most impactful ways to help our organization is to come to Anjali-House to work on a project for our center. Large groups and individuals can raise money for a number of projects at our center and then come to Anjali and help build their project.
For travel groups, schools, religious service groups, and other large groups we are happy to discuss with you the most meaningful way for you to support a project an Anjali-House. Please contact us directly and we can find a time to discuss your project idea. Examples include:
Renovating our library: Raise money and help us renovate our library. Build new bookcases, buy new chairs and cushions, paint the walls, and organize our books.
Building new toilets and showers: For a large group with time and resources, you could make a huge difference by helping to build and pay for new showers and toilets for our students to use everyday.
Gardening and painting: We have a large vegetable garden that needs constant attention. You can also help paint our school!
Administrative, Communications, and Fundraising Support
As a small NGO with limited resources, we contribute almost all our funding towards our programs. However, we rely on volunteers to assist with communications, finance, and fundraising efforts. If you have a limited amount of time, or even for a longer stay, consider helping in our office. Examples include:
Updating our website: Got great computer skills? Help design and create new web pages and manage old ones.
Create donor packets: Help our fundraiser create donor packets for large donors.
Help with our accounting
Come up with creative fundraising ideas: Help us put on a trivia night at a local pub or develop a small income generating enterprise that we can implement.
Depending on your skill set, you can assist our Khmer teachers in running their classrooms. In an effort to provide positive Khmer role models for our students and in order to ensure our sustainability as a development organization, all of our teachers are Cambodian.
Volunteers are responsible for the daily creative workshops at Anjali. There are five workshops with different groups of children every day. Workshops can be 50 minute long activities; can be run over a few days or an entire week. It is important that the kids not only have fun in these workshops, but are also provided with an opportunity to learn in a fun environment. These creative workshops focus on learning through art and crafts.
These sessions are extremely varied, providing students with the opportunity to explore photography, creative writing, drama, music and play. For example: arts and crafts, game, activities and reading. Other responsibilities include:
Assisting a Khmer teacher in English classes
Supervising the kids, monitoring their safety and administering basic first aid when required
Acting as role models for our students by dressing and behaving appropriately (shoulders and knees must be covered)
We ask the volunteers to work as a team, support each other and ensure the workload is spread evenly.
Interested in volunteering at Anjali House?
If you wish to apply, please fill in this application form and return it to email@example.com. Once approved, successful applicants will need to provide a scanned image of their passport, a police check from their country of residence and to abide by our strict Child Protection Policy. To help make the process of applying for a police check easier, please read this important information. Once you have submitted your application, you will be contacted for an interview and then informed as to whether or not your application has been accepted. If you have further questions or enquiries regarding volunteering, please contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org.
Volunteers who cannot commit to a month but would like to teach may like to contact our partner organizations Globalteer and ConCERT, who work with a wide range of projects in Siem Reap and who are able to take volunteers for shorter durations. They also provide general information and advice about volunteering in Cambodia.
Note: The $250 contribution is to offset administrative expenses for volunteers and serves as a general contribution to our organization; a standard practice at most NGOs in Southeast Asia. Housing, transportation, and food will all come at the volunteer’s own expense as we do not have the capacity to pay for these accommodations. If accepted, we would be happy to help you arrange housing in one of our partner guesthouses. All volunteers have the option of eating a free lunch at our center on workdays.
